Gate Technician – Service and Maintenance Specialist with Storage Maintenance Specialists

Company: Storage Maintenance Specialists

Pay: 30.00–36.00+ per hour, based on experience

Location: Indianapolis, IN / Regional Field Service

Employment Type: Full Time

Primary Focus: Commercial Gate Installation, Repair & Maintenance

Required License: Valid Driver's License

The Opportunity

Storage Maintenance Specialists is hiring an experienced Gate Technician to install, repair, troubleshoot, and maintain commercial gate systems for self-storage facilities throughout Indiana and surrounding markets.

This is a hands-on field position for someone who understands the mechanical side of commercial gates first and can also work with gate operators, low-voltage wiring, access-control equipment, and related systems.

We are specifically looking for candidates with real experience installing and servicing commercial gates and operators—not solely security, fire alarm, CCTV, or low-voltage technicians.

You will work independently in the field, supported by a growing company that provides the vehicle, tools, equipment, and resources needed to complete the job correctly.

What You'll Do

  • Install, replace, troubleshoot, and repair commercial sliding, swing, and vertical-pivot gate systems.
  • Install and service gate operators, motors, controls, safety devices, and related mechanical components.
  • Diagnose mechanical failures, alignment issues, operator problems, and system malfunctions.
  • Install and troubleshoot access-control equipment including keypads, card readers, vehicle loops, and low-voltage wiring.
  • Pull and terminate low-voltage wiring through existing conduit and connect access-control components.
  • Ensure gates are properly aligned, leveled, adjusted, and operating according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and safety inspections on commercial gate systems.
  • Use diagnostic meters, hand tools, power tools, and field equipment to identify and resolve problems.
  • Operate small equipment such as a mini loader/Bobcat when needed to move gate materials or components.
  • Document site conditions, completed work, photos, receipts, and service information through company systems.
  • Communicate recommendations and repair findings clearly with facility managers and the internal team.
  • Maintain an organized company vehicle, tools, parts, and job materials.
  • Travel throughout the Indianapolis market and surrounding service territory.

What We're Looking For

  • Strong hands-on experience installing, repairing, and troubleshooting commercial gate systems and gate operators.
  • Ability to independently complete gate installations and service calls with limited supervision.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability.
  • Working knowledge of low-voltage electrical systems and access-control equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose problems involving both mechanical and electrical components.
  • Experience using hand tools, power tools, meters, and field-service equipment.
  • Ability to work outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds and perform physically active field work.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Comfortable using a smartphone or tablet for job documentation, photos, receipts, and work orders.

Experience

  • We are targeting experienced field technicians who can operate independently.
  • 7+ years of relevant mechanical, electrical, gate, fencing, or field-service experience is preferred.
  • Candidates with fewer total years of experience may still be considered if they have strong, direct commercial gate installation and repair experience.

Preferred Experience

Experience with any of the following is highly valuable:

  • DoorKing
  • LiftMaster
  • AutoGate
  • FAAC
  • Viking Access
  • OSCO
  • PTI Security Systems
  • OpenTech Alliance
  • Vehicle detection loops
  • Commercial access-control systems
  • CCTV/security equipment
  • Commercial fencing or gate fabrication
  • Welding or metal fabrication
  • Garage-door or operator systems with transferable mechanical experience

Travel

This is a field-service role, so daily driving to customer sites is part of the job. Most current work is within Indianapolis and the surrounding regional market and can typically be completed as a day trip.

There will also be opportunities for travel throughout Indiana and into surrounding states. Some projects may require short overnight trips lasting approximately 2–3 days.

As Storage Maintenance Specialists continues to expand, candidates who are interested in joining or helping lead a regional traveling gate crew will have additional growth opportunities.

Compensation & Benefits

  • 30.00–36.00+ per hour based on experience.
  • Additional compensation flexibility for highly experienced commercial gate technicians.
  • Weekly pay.
  • Overtime opportunities.
  • 401(k) with employer matching.
  • Dental insurance.
  • Vision insurance.
  • Company vehicle.
  • Company-provided tools and equipment.
  • Smartphone or tablet.
  • Company uniforms.
  • Travel expenses and per diem for qualifying out-of-area assignments.
  • Paid training and continued technical development.
  • Career growth opportunities as the company's regional service footprint expands.
