Assurance Manager – Construction Practice

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Assurance Manager to join our growing public accounting practice. This role is specifically focused on serving our Construction and Real Estate industry clients, ranging from large general contractors and heavy civil firms to specialty subcontractors.

As an Assurance Manager, you will oversee all stages of financial statement audits, reviews, and compilations. You will act as the primary point of contact for client leadership, manage and mentor engagement teams, and leverage your specialized construction knowledge to navigate complex industry accounting issues.

Key Responsibilities

Engagement Management & Technical Execution

  • Lead, plan, and execute complex assurance engagements for construction clients from kickoff to final issuance.
  • Apply advanced technical knowledge of GAAP and construction-specific accounting standards, with a heavy emphasis on ASC 606 (Revenue from Contracts with Customers) for long-term contracts.
  • Review and analyze critical construction metrics: job cost accumulations, work-in-progress (WIP) schedules, under/over billings, change orders, claims, and backlog profitability.
  • Evaluate client internal controls over project management, bidding processes, and labor/material costing allocations.
  • Ensure compliance with professional standards, firm methodologies, and regulatory requirements.

Client Relationship & Advisory

  • Serve as the trusted, day-to-day advisor to construction business owners, CEOs, and CFOs.
  • Communicate audit findings, internal control weaknesses, and operational recommendations clearly to client management.
  • Stay ahead of construction industry trends, economic shifts, and regulatory changes to proactively advise clients on financial health and risk management.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Manage, train, and mentor Seniors and Associates, providing real-time technical guidance and constructive performance feedback.
  • Oversee engagement economics, including budgeting, billing, and resource allocation to ensure profitable and timely delivery.
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performing team environment that encourages professional growth.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience: Minimum of 5+ years of progressive public accounting assurance/audit experience.
  • Industry Focus: Proven track record of working directly with construction industry clients (General Contractors, Subcontractors, Developers). Deep familiarity with WIP schedules is required.
  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting or a related field.
  • Certification: Active CPA license is strongly preferred.
  • Technical Proficiency: Comprehensive understanding of US GAAP, GAAS, and ASC 606 contract accounting. Experience with common construction ERPs and public accounting audit software is a plus.
  • Leadership: Strong project management skills with a demonstrated ability to lead multiple engagement teams simultaneously.
  • Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to discuss complex financial matters easily with non-accounting stakeholders.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary and performance-based bonus structure.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision benefits.
  • 401(k) matching and profit-sharing opportunities.
  • Clear, structured path to Senior Manager and Partner tracks.
  • Flexible working arrangements and a supportive, balanced firm culture.
