CBS² is seeking an energetic, highly motivated, detail-oriented, self-starter to join our team as a Construction Engineer. This is a full-time role based out of our Madison, WI office.
The Construction Engineer will support construction-phase services for transportation, WisDOT, municipal, and related civil infrastructure projects. This role assists with onsite inspections, construction documentation, contractor coordination, and review of work for compliance with project plans, specifications, and applicable standards. The Construction Engineer will work closely with Construction Project Leaders, project managers, engineers, inspectors, survey staff, contractors, and clients while continuing to grow their technical knowledge across both construction administration and civil engineering design. This position plays an important role in supporting high-quality project delivery and CBS²’s commitment to client service, community impact, and practical engineering solutions.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assist with construction-phase services for transportation, WisDOT, municipal, and related civil infrastructure projects.
- Perform onsite inspections and field observations to help verify work is completed in compliance with project plans, specifications, and applicable standards.
- Coordinate with contractors, clients, project leaders, engineers, inspectors, and internal team members regarding field-related questions, issues, and project updates.
- Prepare and maintain construction documentation, including daily reports, field notes, quantity tracking, photos, and related project records.
- Support Construction Project Leaders with project coordination, documentation, contractor communication, and field issue resolution.
- Assist with WisDOT construction administration processes, including documentation, reporting, and use of applicable project systems such as AASHTOWare Project/AWP.
- Support project work and serve as a backup to Construction Project Leaders as needed.
- Assist with survey-related field work, construction staking, measurements, layout support, or use of survey equipment as needed.
- Review project plans, specifications, quantities, and construction details to support accurate project delivery.
- Assist with design and plan development for transportation, municipal, and related civil engineering projects when project workload requires.
- Utilize engineering and document management tools such as Bluebeam, Microsoft Office, and related civil design or construction software.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements & Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering field.
- 2+ years of related civil engineering, construction inspection, construction administration, transportation, municipal, or infrastructure experience preferred.
- Engineer-in-Training certification, or willingness to obtain and continue progressing toward Professional Engineer licensure.
- Familiarity with construction administration, civil engineering design principles, construction methods, and interpretation of plans and specifications.
- Familiarity with WisDOT construction processes, documentation, standards, and/or applications, including AASHTOWare Project/AWP or related systems.
- Experience with Bluebeam or related document review/markup tools.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word and Excel.
- Ability to coordinate effectively with contractors, clients, project leaders, project managers, engineers, inspectors, and internal staff.
- Strong communication, organization, problem-solving, math, and technical documentation skills.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to travel to project sites, work in the field, and work overtime as project demands require.
Desired Skills & Experience:
- HTCP certifications, or willingness to obtain.
- Experience with Trimble, Carlson, or related survey equipment.
- Familiarity with Autodesk Build or related construction management software.
- Exposure to OpenRoads Designer, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, or related design software.
- Experience with WisDOT, municipal, transportation, roadway, utility, or civil infrastructure projects.
- Experience assisting with construction administration, daily diaries/reports, quantity tracking, pay estimates, or project closeout documentation.
- Experience supporting design and plan preparation for transportation or municipal projects.
- Interest in growing into additional construction project leadership responsibilities over time.
